Education
Principal's Academy
Proposed for the second year, this project was officially launched in November
2007. The academy is an initiative run by the African Leadership Institute,
sponsored by the Old Mutual Foundation in close co-operation with the Ministry
of Education.
Objectives of the Principal's Academy:
- Influence the hearts and minds of identified leaders to know themselves, their
calling and responsibilities, and then to accept ownership of their
responsibilities and their role in the development of Namibia.
- Build strong characters that can sustain and endure the pressure of being in
leadership positions, as well as the accompanying challenges and successes.
- Develop skills to cast vision, build strong teams, empower people and generate
results.
- Build a trained leader (brick) in a system (wall) of accountability and
transparency to ensure sustainability, ongoing development and growth.
- Support leaders to understand the importance of prioritised relationships and a
balanced lifestyle.
This initiative has been identified as a key project due to its sustainability in
the medium to long-term. Preliminary feedback is highly positive and the first
intake of principal’s are engaged and committed to the programme, as well as
excited about implementing their new skills.
Enkondopeko Mathematics Project
This project, a three year programme implemented in 2005, is a joint venture
between the Ministry of Education (Kavango region) and the Namibian Mathematics
Institute - sponsored by Nedbank Namibia and the Old Mutual Foundation. During
the first stage of the project 25 regional subject teachers from different
circuits in the region were identified to receive training over a three year
period. During this period facilitators attended four one week workshops per
year. By the end of the second year, remarkable improvement in mathematics
performance in schools where these participants are teaching was evident.
Proposed activities for 2008/9
Currently no government school offers NSSC(H) (higher level) Mathematics in the
Kavango region. At the last Enkondopeko Mathematics regional session the region
identified the following priorities in this region for the next two years:
- Training of primary mathematics teachers at circuit level in terms of content
knowledge using the top junior secondary Enkondopeko facilitators.
- Motivational training for selected key mathematics teachers at different levels,
primary and secondary, using the Math Wizard tool.
- Introduction of additional mathematics classes in grade 9 in 2008 at some
selected schools of the facilitators.
The training of all grade 12 mathematics teachers plus some of the top Ekondopeko
facilitators at NSSC(H) mathematics level over the next two years.
