Unit Trusts
Unit trusts are an excellent savings vehicle for the long term, provided you have
the discipline not to cash in and use the money for something other than your
child’s education.
The greatest advantage of investing in unit trusts is that your choice of fund is
determined by the amount of time you have to save. If your child is an infant
when you start investing you have the luxury of a good few years and can invest
in slightly higher risk funds. This is because when you have time on your side
shorter-term volatility evens out. As education commences, risk should be
moderated with more emphasis placed on capital protection.
Features and Benefits
- Long-term growth and income: One of the primary benefits of investing in unit
trusts for your long-term goals is that they perform best over a long period of
time thereby avoiding the shorter-term fluctuations of the market.
- Flexibility: Unit trusts are flexible enough to accommodate changes in your
financial portfolio. Switching enables you to move between funds as your risk
profile or investment needs change and when the markets shift.
- Suitable for different risk tolerance levels: Different funds cater for
individual risk tolerance.
- Choice: Old Mutual offers a range of unit trusts that are suitable for all risk
types and time horizons.
- Liquidity: Unit trusts are ‘liquid’. Although it is not advisable to access
these savings in the short term, you have the option of selling some of your
unit trusts. There are no penalties incurred and, if you have met all the
necessary requirements, payment is within a few days.
Investment Term
There is no minimum or maximum investment term. It is advisable to remain
invested for at least three to five years so as to iron out market fluctuations.
Investment Minimums
The investment minimum for most of Old Mutual’s unit trusts is N$500 a month or
N$5000 lump sum.
Fees & Charges
These values vary according to the amount invested and the category of fund in
